Diabetes Nurse Educator

Lake Charles Memorial Health System

This is a Full-time position in Lake Charles, LA posted February 2, 2021.

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: A professional nurse with a minimum of 2 years experience who provides a variety of teaching for staff, patients, families, and community.


  • BSN preferred and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist(CDCES) preferred. · Current RN license in Louisiana or multi state compact license.
  • Two years clinical experience · Current CPR requirement BLS


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Outpatient Diabetes Education: an active participant in providing service to outpatients and assisting with the maintenance of the American Diabetes Association Recognition Program.
  • an active participant in scheduling and teaching patients and their families regarding Diabetes Self Management.
  • maintenance of documentation and records.
  • physician’s correspondence of patient’s participation -patient follow up

  • Inpatient Diabetes Education:
  • an active participant seeing patients and their families in preparation for discharge as prompted by nursing and/or medical staff.
  • participates in every other weekend call.
  • communicates with other departments/disciplines in providing quality for patients and their families.
  • serves as a liaison between administration, the physicians, and ancillary departments in order to affect positive outcomes.

  • New nurse orientation:
  • coordinates and participates in the orientation process of new employees including the NovoStat blood glucose monitoring system.
  • participates in the maintenance of blood glucose devices in conjunction with nursing, lab, and ITS. -develops and revises policies and procedures for Patient Care Services.
  • serves as a liaison between administration, the physicians, and ancillary departments in order to affect positive outcomes.

  • Community outreach: coordinates and participates in community screening on and off campus as directed by Nursing and/or Marketing.


  • Will follow LCMH RN dress code.
  • Will work closely with Diabetes Education Coordinator, Nursing Education Staff and others p.r.n.


  • Role Development if not a CDCES will pursue attainment of certification.


  • Safety will follow LCMH’s safety guidelines
  • Privacy will follow LCMH’s privacy guidelines
  • Process Improvement will participate in the Diabetes Education Quality Improvement

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: Being able to walk around the campus daily and lift a minimum of twenty pounds.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Per the American Diabetes Association employee will accrue 15 hours of Diabetes related continuing education each year (mandated by the ADA Recognition Program).


Category I Job usually involves contact with patients or patient specimens. Exposure of blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens, is possible.
