* DutiesHelpDutiesSummaryThis position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, LANTAREA, Coast Guard District Eight, Sector New Orleans in New Orleans, LA.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesThe position is responsible for supervising Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) operations at the Vessel Traffic Center (VTC) on a rotating shift, providing continuous service to the mariner, seven days a week, 24 hours per day.

You will coordinate vessel traffic in an assigned geographic area in order to reduce the probability of vessel collisions, ramming and groundings and ensuring no environmental damage; facilitates vessel traffic movement and assisting Coast Guard and other agencies in the accomplishment of their missions including search and rescue, law enforcement, environmental protection, maritime security and aids to navigation.

This work contributes to the safe and efficient movement of all vessels in the service area, with special attention to those carrying hazardous cargo, reducing the probability of marine casualties that could result in severe environmental damage and loss of property or life.Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include:* Supervising and coordinating the efforts of a group of civilian and/or military Vessel Traffic Management Specialists during a shift.* Taking initial response action for incidents; contacting appropriate personnel to response, issuing instructions personally or through subordinates or as a representative of higher authority; and maintaining contact with other traffic management authorities or government counterparts.* Working with subordinates to track the movement of vessels in the Area of Responsibility (AOR) using all available means (closed-circuit television, radar, radiotelephone, AIS, computers).* Monitoring vessel reports, safety information broadcasts and the transmission of information, advisories and directions.* Operating a variety of surveillance sensors, communications, data processing, keyboard and other electronic equipment.* Exercising authority to direct vessel movement during especially hazardous conditions using guidelines established in regulations, unit directives and/or Captain of the Port (COTP) Orders.Travel RequiredOccasional travel

Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade.QualificationsTo Qualify for the GS-12: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.Examples of specialized experience include:* Supervising and/or leading vessel traffic service operations; assisting in the responsibility for overall readiness, appearance, good order and discipline of the Vessel Traffic Center.* Assisting in carrying out special assignments and collateral duties including, but not limited to serving on panels boards or research projects.* Operating a variety of surveillance sensors, communications, data processing, keyboard and other electronic equipment.* Assisting in carrying out duties prescribed by a commanding Officer during actual or simulated wartime conditions.National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
