Orbital Engineering, Inc. is seeking an experienced Lead Inspector to work out of our Hammond, IN office supporting major client’s projects as well as others that may be assigned. A successful candidate will serve as a project manager, senior technical support, as well as inspect structural components at customer locations and ensure that any structural deficiencies on the structure(s) being inspected are recorded for customer use.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Schedule, organize, direct and review inspection activities.
  • Establish and execute operational plans for the department with respect to routine, tools and resources to ensure consistent operations and growth of skill sets.
  • Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures for the technical work performed in the department.
  • Function as Project Manager on specific projects as required. Prepare, or supervise the preparation of proposals including development of scopes of work, project schedules and cost estimates. Prepare, review and/or check inspection reports, repair recommendations, drawings and other project documents related to this specific discipline on projects as required.
  • Develop, maintain and upgrade technical standards/specifications to be used on specific projects, as well as centralized design basis and historical references.
  • Provide enhanced customer support as a technical liaison, and support regional business development initiatives as a technical recourse.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills with clients and engineering personnel are essential. 
  • Candidates should have a thorough understanding and aptitude in the use of current computer software.
  • Detect possible defects and faults in structural & mechanical systems and recommend or stipulate appropriate remedial measures for noncomplex defects and complex defects. 
  • Conducts routine safety audits of the crew. Certifies designs and drawings as appropriate. Supervises other inspectors and provides performance recommendations and feedback to senior management.
  • Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
  • Use graphic instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids.
  • Applies intensive and diversified knowledge in broad areas of assignments, especially projects concerned with unique or specialized problems.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.


  • 10+ years of experience
  • Preference given to API Certifications 510/565/653, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) (magnetic particle, ultrasonic testing, weld penetrant, etc.), and Certified WeldInspector(CWI) credentials.
