Nuclear Forensics Senior Scientist – Senior R&D Staff

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

This is a Full-time position in Oak Ridge, LA posted May 9, 2021.

We are seeking a senior nuclear forensics scientist who will focus on expanding the pre and post detonation nuclear forensic programs with an emphasis on mass spectrometry and fixed laboratory capabilities.

The individual should be well versed in current nuclear forensics fixed laboratory needs and methods in order to provide leadership in the development of existing programs as well identifying and pursuing future opportunities.

This position resides in the Chemical and Isotope Mass Spectrometry (CIMS) group in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) Section which resides in the Chemical Science Division (CSD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will be responsible to develop and grow our nuclear forensics programs.

As a senior researcher, you will be interfacing with domestic and international sponsors and peers within the nuclear forensics community to create new growth areas, cultivate proposals and strengthen established programs.

In addition, the individual will be expected to integrate ORNL’s unique capability across the NAC section to strengthen the laboratory’s position in the community.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Develop and grow the NAC’s nuclear forensic portfolio.

Participate in the development of novel analytical methodologies using the next generation isotope ratio mass spectrometers and analytical separation systems.

Synergistic interactions with all subject matter experts working in national and international nuclear forensic programs.

Collaborate with peer scientific professionals to cross training and share knowledge.

Basic Qualifications:
A Ph.D.

in Geology, Chemistry, Oceanography, Physics or a related discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience Research and development experience in pre or post detection forensic programs
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a Principle Investigator for funded projects with a nuclear forensics focus.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with modern sample preparation and separation methods used in the isotopic and elemental characterization with emphases on nuclear and chemical materials.

Knowledge and experience with actinide and lanthanide materials, as well as safety considerations for handling them.

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Maintain training requirements and qualification for ORNL Radiation Worker II.

Working knowledge of cleanroom operations and protocols.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy.

As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.

WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

In addition, due the SCI, you may be also be subject to random polygraph testing.
