Prenatal Genetic Counselor

The Genetics Counselor works independently to provide comprehensive genetic counseling services for a variety of patients. The position is predominantly oncology genetics, with a smaller roll in neonatal intensive care genetic counseling and occasional prenatal/other genetic counseling.

Job Duties – Oncology

  • Works with patients referred by numerous internal and external providers for a broad spectrum of cancer genetic syndromes and other rare cancer genetic conditions.
  • Collects and evaluates the patient’s personal and family history to determine if appropriate genetic testing is needed, including completing comprehensive 3-generation pedigrees
  • Evaluates patients’ cancer risk and/or risk to carry cancer-predisposing genetic mutations and appropriately uses available risk models
  • Provides psychosocial assessment and support for all patients
  • Educates patients on the process of counseling and the information that will be obtained. Is available to patients/families to answer questions about process.
  • Obtains informed consent and offers appropriate testing options, including cost estimates. Completes genetic counseling paperwork for insurance prior-authorization when needed.
  • Provides post-test genetic counseling ensuring genetic test results are provided in the context of the patient’s personal, family history and/or empiric data. Discusses significance and impact of test results and provides evidence-based guidelines & recommendations to the patients for cancer screening and prevention plans. Provides educational resources & referrals, as needed.
  • Provides support for at-risk relatives and help coordinate relative testing, if appropriate
  • Attends and participates in weekly multidisciplinary breast cancer tumor boards, twice-monthly gynecologic cancer multidisciplinary tumor boards, and quarterly meetings for breast multidisciplinary team and breast leadership team.
  • Gives occasional presentations on oncology genetics to various audiences, including but not limited to: OBGYN residents; nurses; cancer survivor support groups; other medical professionals
  • Maintains a set of updated oncology genetics visual aids to use in genetic counseling sessions, creates new visual aids as needed.

Job Duties – Neonatal Intensive Care Services

  • Works as the local genetic counselor for SouthSeq – a multicenter research study involving whole genome sequencing of NICU infants suspected of having an underlying genetic condition.
  • Works closely with the local SouthSeq team as well as the Hudson Alpha team leaders in carrying out research study.
  • Discloses whole genome sequencing test results to parents of NICU infants, when the results are randomized to be disclosed by the site genetic counselor.
  • Completes brief follow-up documentation on disclosure.
  • Remains available on an on-call basis, during regular business hours, for calls from NICU providers that need help with coordinating genetic testing for a variety of genetic conditions.
  • Collaborates with the referrals department staff in Woman’s lab to determine appropriate labs to send NICU genetic testing specimens to.
  • Occasionally provide pre-testing genetic counseling to parents of NICU babies, which may include consenting for panel testing, microarray, or whole exome sequencing.
